IDI EVOLUTION: INTO THE FUTURE, FOR 20 YEARS

IDI Evolution is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. This Italian company specializes in dental implants and related technology. Founded in 1989 as IDI - Innovative Dental Implantology, it evolved into IDI Evolution Srl in 2002.

What did the evolution of IDI into IDI Evolution mean?

It meant giving substance to the vision that guided the company for the next 20 years: living "in the future," being an inspiration and a point of reference for dentists, striving to anticipate their needs. IDI was born as a dental product company. It was with the initial insight into reading bone density and primary stability that we began our evolution, being the first to understand the importance of data in dentistry and its central application in analysis models, clinical care, and research.

You've always been pioneers in dental technology research. What are the essential ingredients to stay ahead of the curve?

An American entrepreneur, Bernard Baruch, once said: “Millions of people saw the apple fall, but only Newton asked 'why?'” We try to approach each day with the same critical spirit and genuine curiosity. Every morning we wake up wondering what the next step will be, the next piece in the dental care of tomorrow. Inspiration can come from the most unexpected contexts, such as nature, art, technology, travel, and even cuisine. For example, BlackBox, one of the most successful products of recent years, was born during a trip, observing a sushi restaurant. Convergence and an open mind are essential if the goal is to anticipate and avoid being anticipated .

Why is using information technology and data analysis so important?

For a clinician and their team, being able to rely on data means greater safety, accuracy, speed, and , consequently, minimizing errors. From the patient's perspective , it means better care, greater transparency , and understanding of the treatments received. Our ultimate goal, shared by the dentists we work with , is precisely this: more informed patients and better care.

What challenges do you see in the future for the dental market and for IDI?

As in many other sectors, the main macro-trends in dentistry will be technology and sustainability. The first one, as mentioned, is a challenge taken up by IDI Evolution right from the start , which currently sees us engaged in three main areas: total patient virtualization, telemedicine, and blockchain to improve care through verified processes. Regarding sustainability, our sector also aims to reduce its environmental impact by moving toward increasingly natural and recyclable products, a direction we at IDI have also been pursuing for a couple of years now.

The path of innovators is often more complicated. What has been your experience?

An intense journey, rich in innovative ideas but also unconventional decisions, which at times led us to encounter the skepticism of those who don't believe in innovation and new approaches. A path that, however, has led us to become a company with a clear vision, the most innovative in the Italian dental industry . With over 1,700 customers and a 20% increase in turnover in 2021 alone for IDI Evolution and 45% for IDI Makers. One figure we care deeply about, however, is the evolution of our customers , the 'dentists of the future' , who thanks to IDI have reduced their chair time by 50% on average and the costs of prosthetics by 40%, increasing their turnover by up to 400%.
